CAMPAIGNS TO REDUCE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Humans produce 300 million tons of plastic each year, worldwide, half of which is for single-use items. Our addiction to plastic is having a devastating impact on our oceans, our wildlife, and our health.

We are calling on schools to get creative — design and implement a campaign to ban single-use plastics at your school or throughout the island and sustain it for a year (and beyond).

The goal is to spearhead a long-term movement that drives itself and becomes routine for both the students and the staff, embedding the campaign into the identity of the school and surrounding community.

POTENTIAL ACTIVITIES

  • Run a campaign for guesthouses, visitors and tourists to participate in a plastic-free journey

  • Work with shops and community members to ban disposable cups, straws and cutlery from the island by introducing sustainable alternatives

  • Talk with local shops to replace plastic bags with reusable totes

RESOURCES NEEDED

  • A thoughtful mind to produce a campaign that will permeate throughout the island

  • Community involvement to source alternatives to plastic bags like cloth totes

  • Shop owner and guesthouse involvement to implement changes to their businesses
