Schools across the Maldives already serve one milk carton or equivalent to each student, every day. The usage of disposable plastics at a school climbs to 4 or 5 items a day, once you count the other packaged drinks students bring for break and the straws attached. These account for the second largest amount of single-use plastics in schools.

HOW

  • Encourage students to bring drinks from home in reusable containers — either homemade drinks or poured in from bigger packs

  • Encourage students and families to not bring or use straws with their drinks

    • This also means that visitors to school will not be served a straw with welcome drinks

MEASURE

  • Awareness sessions for parents and students

  • Written policy for students and parents

  • School to not serve straws to any visitors and in any school events
