BAN SINGLE-USE LUNCH BOXES
Styrofoam boxes are a large part of the plastic waste that cannot be recycled in most parts of the world. It is used for convenience and is a quickly becoming a part of working culture. When parents bring lunch or a snack to children while on the go, it is actually increasing the throwaway snack packaging and styrofoam box use. If all schools only allowed reusable containers, parents might too change their behavior to carry a container to the restaurant/café/shop and take it to school. This will reduce the waste generated by school and also educate parents on reducing their plastic footprint and throwaway culture.
HOW
Encourage use of reusable containers (also applicable to morning breakfast). Many schools already practice using reusable containers as part of reducing their waste.
Schools can further this by encouraging students to bring packed lunches from home, and reducing ordering in from places that deliver in styrofoam containers.
Use reusable containers to pick up take out for lunch time. Staff can take a break to go eat out so there is no lunch box footprint!
MEASURE
Goal is to get 100% of students, admin and staff to NOT use single-use lunch boxes
Written policy
